Rivers

UNA

The River Una was named by the Romans, who exclaimed ‘UNA’ when they saw it for the first time, meaning the one and only in Latin.

The Una River springs in Donja Suvaja and Donji Lapac in the foothills of the Pljesevica and Strazbenica Mountains in Croatia. Una flows for 212.5 kilometers before it converges with the Sava River. Throughout most of its flow, Una forms a border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The river spring is in a karst region surrounded by steep cliffs and rocks that create numerous waterfalls. Sparkling clean water flows through one of the most dramatic regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and this part of Europe and is unique for its rapids, waterfalls, and whirlpools. The flow of Una is the largest national park in the country with rich biodiversity, particularly fish species. An estimated 29 species live in the river.

Rafting on the Una River is an exceptional experience. Rafters will be mesmerized by its beauty and splendor of its canyons. Each year, the Una Regatta is held to promote the natural environment of the region, which provides an excellent opportunity to explore the region. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, cycling, biking, and camping.
