Where to go  >  Old Forts/cities
BiH cultural heritage is famous. As the crossroad for many different empires country is rich with historical sites left as a witness of the past period. Tourists will be surprised by the number of cultural heritage sites (some under UNESCO protection) in relation to relatively small area.
The Old Town of Ljubuski is located on the pointed top of the karst Buturovica hill chain at the east end of Ljubusko polje. The town is built on solid karst, 396 meters above the sea level. After the 1992-1995 war, the macadam road was constructed almost all the way to the bottom of the town.
The old town of Blagaj (Bona, Stjepan town) was built on the most prominent location at the high and not easily accessible karst hill, at 310 meters above the sea level and up the source of the river Buna, 266 meters away.
In the Middle Ages, Pocitelj was the administrative center of the Dubrava district. Being the farthest western point of the district, it was very strategically important. Presumably the builder of the fortified town and founder of suburban areas was the Bosnian king Stjepan Tvrtko I in 1383.
The construction of the fort complex in this town started in 1756 and lasted until 1821. The central building, within confines of the fort complex, with three entrances protected by towers, is about 18 meters high three-story tower with an elevated section, which served as Captain’s castle.
The fortress was built in the first half of the 15th century during the Bosnian independency, presumably during the reign of Bosnian king Ostoja or king Tvrtko. The town consists of a few architectural units creating a harmonious overall appearance of the fortress.
Historical sources indicate forts of Jajce (citadel, town ramparts, towers, catacombs and other parts of the fort) were erected by the duke Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic between 1391 and 1404. Soon after, Jajce became the capital of the Bosnian Kingdom.
Tesanj Fortress is one of major and largest forts in BiH. It spans 6,292 square meters. The exact date of construction is unknown; however some historians speculate construction had begun during the Illyrian period. Due to its position it was mostly used for defensive purposes.
Bobovac was the most important and most fortified town of the medieval Bosnia. It was built on a sheer, steep cliff of the southern slopes of the Dragovske and Mijakovske Poljice mountain range, southwest from Vares.
The old town Vranduk with a settlement is located 10 kilometers from Zenica. It is situated on the left bank of the Bosna River.
The old fortress Kastel is located in the heart of Banja Luka. It is one of the oldest buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The fortress and town of Doboj are located in the north Bosnia. It represented a central part of the area south from the Sava River.
Srebrenik is a medieval fortress above the town of Srebrenik in the northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortress was built on an isolated cliff. The only entrance to the fortress is a wooden bridge that connects the cliff with the rest of the hill.
